UN says aid to Gaza is blocked at Israeli port

The main United Nations agency providing aid to Palestinians in Gaza is facing increasing administrative obstacles from Israel, officials said. The head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, UNRWA, said that a food shipment that could meet the needs of the Palestinians for 30 days had been blocked at an Israeli port.

Israel claims that 12 employees of this agency were involved in the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, while a number of donor countries suspended funding. UNRWA has dismissed the accused staff and launched an investigation.

"Currently, the environment we are in is quite hostile towards the agency. Some decisions are beginning to affect the agency's ability to function properly," Philippe Lazzarini, head of the Palestinian aid agency UNRWA, said on Friday.

He said a contractor providing services to the agency at the port of Ashdod has informed him that it could not continue working with the aid organization following instructions from Israeli authorities.

As a result, Mr. Lazzarini said, a shipment from Turkey with 1,049 containers of food supplies that could cover the needs of 1.1 million people for a month has been blocked at the port.

He said UNRWA had informed Turkey about the blockade. Until the publication of this news, there has been no comment from the Turkish authorities. The incident comes as Gaza faces a growing humanitarian emergency, with hundreds of thousands of Palestinians facing acute starvation./ Voa
