Asia celebrates the Lunar New Year

People across Asia welcomed the Lunar New Year on Saturday with family celebrations, festivals and visits to temples in search of blessings.

Lunar New Year is the most important holiday in China - a time for reuniting with family and friends, as well as preparing lots of food.

Each year, the year is named after one of the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac, and this time it is considered the Year of the Dragon - the most popular sign in Chinese communities.

The Year of the Dragon is very popular for the Chinese to have children because many couples hope that their children will have the capacities that the dragon symbolizes, including strength and success.

In Beijing, large crowds of people gather near temples to watch traditional dances.

Some have even lit candles to pray for good health and well-being.

Apart from China, the festival is also celebrated in South Korea, Vietnam and other Chinese communities.

In Myanmar and Malaysia, believers also visit temples./ REL
