The European Union has called to investigate cases of allegations of irregularities during the elections held in Serbia on December 17 and to maintain calm.

This is what the spokeswoman for the EU, Nabila Massrali, said in response to questions about recent developments in Serbia, where protests are continuing with demands for the cancellation of elections and the announcement of new elections.

"Complaints about electoral irregularities must be investigated and addressed properly. While the right to peaceful protests must be respected, violence is not a solution and is unacceptable," she said.

On December 17, Serbia held parliamentary, local and provincial elections.

The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) of the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vu?i?, has declared victory at all levels.

The observer mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe said on December 18 that the election was characterized by serious irregularities, misuse of state funds, negative campaigning and the spread of fear.

Meanwhile, MEPs have demanded an independent investigation into all the irregularities in the Serbian elections.

The United States has also called on authorities in Serbia to investigate allegations of irregularities made by international observers.

On December 24, the opposition list, "Serbia against violence" - which has organized several protests against the election result - protested in front of the Municipal Assembly in Belgrade, demanding the annulment of the elections.

The protest was tense, as the protesters broke the windows of the building, as they tried to enter the Municipal Assembly of Belgrade.

Massrali from the EU said that "police actions must be proportionate and respect basic human rights, within the rule of law".

"The EU invites for calm and dialogue", she said.

Until now, the EU has been restrained in its pronouncements on the developments in Serbia. From Brussels, they spoke about the need to address the remarks and irregularities, but they did not specifically address the demands of the opposition and the students who are protesting. / CNA
