Political balances in the Middle East/ Secretary Marco Rubio travels to Israel

Secretary of State Marco Rubio will arrive in Israel on Sunday for a two-day visit, which comes on the heels of his meeting with the prime minister of Qatar on Friday, in what appears to be an effort by the United States to balance relations in the Middle East.

The State Department said that during his visit, Rubio and Israeli leaders will discuss operational objectives in Gaza and America's priorities in Israeli security and the broader Middle East, with an emphasis on the Trump administration's commitment to countering anti-Israel actions, including unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state.

The visit comes as an attempt to broker an agreement for the release of hostages and a ceasefire.

It comes days after Israel attacked Doha, claiming it was targeting Hamas militants who had gathered in Qatar, a key mediator in Israel-Hamas negotiations, to discuss a US proposal for a ceasefire./CNA
