Shipwreck with migrants in the middle of the sea/ 1 victim and 19 injured in Mallorca

At least one person has died and 19 others have been injured after a boat carrying migrants from North Africa was found south of the Spanish island of Mallorca after sailing at sea for almost a week.

Healthcare workers provided first aid to at least 18 people, with three transferred to nearby hospitals in serious condition.

The drifting ship was found more than four kilometers off the southern coast of Mallorca after a private boat rescued a sub-Saharan migrant from the sea, who alerted authorities to the vessel he was traveling on.

An air and naval operation was launched and the boat was found with 11 migrants still on board and one body.

Seven other people were rescued from the sea near the sunken ship.

Last week, officials in the Balearic Islands said more than 30 ships carrying around 600 migrants had arrived in the archipelago, a surge that suggests the islands' growing popularity as an entry point to Europe as authorities tighten other routes. /CNA
