Helicopter accident/ The President of Iran dies

The president of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, has died in a helicopter accident, state media confirm.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian also lost his life in this accident.

Earlier rescuers who arrived at the helicopter crash site in northwest Iran said there were "no signs of life".

Raisi was heading to the northwestern Iranian city of Tabriz after returning from an Iran-Azerbaijan border area, according to local media.

The incident prompted a massive search operation that was hampered by bad weather conditions.

His death comes at a difficult time in the Middle East, with the war raging in Gaza. The helicopter crashed weeks after Iran launched a drone and missile attack on Israel in response to a deadly attack on its diplomatic corps in Damascus.

Raisi became president in a historically uncontested election in 2021. Previously chief justice, he has overseen a period of intensified repression of dissent in a nation rocked by youth-led protests against clerical rule.

Raisi was the second most powerful person in the political structure of the Islamic Republic after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khomeini.
