Suicide attack outside the Russian Embassy in Kabul

A suicide bomber detonated explosives outside the Russian Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan.

On September 5, local media broadcast footage of ambulances heading to the scene.

Reuters news agency said two people were killed and 11 wounded after a suicide bomber detonated his explosives while being shot by Embassy guards.

Police official Mawlawi Sabir told the media that the attacker was shot dead.

Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported that a diplomat and a security guard were injured in the incident, which occurred as a long line of Afghans were waiting to get visas to Russia.

This agency cited local media as reporting that 15-20 people were killed or injured.

Russia is one of the few countries that has kept its embassy in Kabul open since the Taliban seized power in August last year. The international community – including Russia – does not recognize the de facto Taliban authorities in Afghanistan.

The Taliban took control of the state shortly after the international coalition led by the United States withdrew from the state and shortly thereafter the previous Government fell./REL
