"I will leave for a long time"/ The Chechen leader gives up power
Ramzan Kadyrov

Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Russia's Chechen region, said on Telegram on September 3 that he plans to take an "indefinite and long" leave from his post, although some experts questioned the sincerity of his announcement.

Kadyrov, 45, has ruled the Russian republic of Chechnya since 2007 and is the longest-serving leader of a Russian region.

"I realized that I have held this position for a long time," he wrote. "I think the time has come [to leave power]."

It is unclear what Kadyrov, who is believed to have close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, will do next.

Under his rule, the region has been accused of massive human rights violations.

Kadyrov in March reportedly traveled to Ukraine, where members of his group are believed to be fighting alongside Russian regular forces.

Chechen paramilitary units are widely regarded as a formidable military force. In the past, they were deployed, allegedly with the authorization of the Government, in the east of Ukraine, but also in other countries such as Syria./rel
