Energy consumption in Albania, 44% renewable, about twice the EU average

Energy consumption in Albania, 44% renewable, about twice the EU average

At least 44% of the energy consumed in the country in 2022 came from renewable sources.

This figure is almost two times higher than the average of renewable energy consumed in the European Union. This positive aspect related to Albania has to do with the fact that although in other sectors of the economy fuels have a considerable weight, energy production is totally from hydro sources.

Although this keeps Albania above the EU average, it certainly exposes it to the risk of energy security when the hydro years are not so favorable, something that has recently encouraged a trend towards diversification and projects mainly related to photovoltaics and wind .

At least 23% of energy consumed in 2022 came from renewable sources in the EU

Renewable sources in total energy consumption in the European Union represent 23 percent in 2022, an increase of 1.1 percentage points compared to 2021.

Sweden, the highest consumption from renewable sources

Sweden leads the way among EU countries, with nearly two-thirds of total energy consumption coming from renewable sources in 2022.

Sweden relied mainly on hydro, wind, solid and liquid biofuels, and heat pumps. After it comes Finland (47.9%), which also relies on the same sources, while the third, Latvia (43.3%), which depends mostly on hydropower plants. Both Denmark (41.6%), followed by Estonia (38.5%), get most of their renewables from wind and solid biofuels. Portugal (34.7%) relies on solid biofuels, wind, hydro and heat pumps, while Austria (33.8%) uses mainly hydro and solid biofuels.

The lowest percentages of renewables were recorded in Ireland (13.1%), Malta (13.4%), Belgium (13.8%) and Luxembourg (14.4%).

In total, 17 of the 27 EU members are below the EU average of 23.0% in 2022./ Monitor Magazine
