The population decline is expected to automatically improve one of the indicators that Albania has had the lowest in Europe, that of income per capita.

With 400,000 people less than the figures with which the calculation was made until now, the value produced by the economy in a year is redistributed to 2.4 million people and not about 2.8 million which was calculated as the indicator per capita until now.

Specifically, according to data from the Ministry of Finance, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which measures the value of final goods and services produced by the economy in a year, was 2.3 trillion ALL, or 23 billion euros.

Yes, according to Finance, the per capita income expressed in Lek in 2023 was 829 thousand Lek. This figure is calculated for a population of 2.78 million inhabitants.

With the new population figure of 2.4 million inhabitants, the indicator per capita automatically goes to 963 thousand ALL per capita, with an increase of 13%, or about 133 thousand ALL (1300 euros) more per inhabitant.

According to the official forecasts of the Ministry of Finance, Albania has today reached the level where it is expected to reach in three years, in 2026.

Until now, Eurostat data ranked Albania last in Europe for per capita income, with about 35% of the European average. However, this indicator is now expected to improve with a drop of the pencil due to the significant reduction of the population.

INSTAT reported in the last census of 2023 that the country's population has decreased to about 2.4 million inhabitants, from 2.8 million in the population census of 2011. Meanwhile, throughout these decades the calculations per capita in relation to the population have been made at about 2.8 million residents.

For 2023, the population was estimated at 2.76 million before the Census figures came out.

The decline of the population is expected to affect all indicators per capita, where the obvious improvement is in income per capita, while some others such as accidents or murders in relation to the population, or diseases per capita will worsen./Monitor
