Year after year, Albania is climbing among the countries with the highest dairy prices in Europe according to Eurostat data.

In the publication of household expenses for the basket of consumer goods, the European Institute of Statistics ranked Albania in eighth place for the high level of prices of milk and its by-products among 38 countries.

A year ago in 2022, Albania had dairy prices 11.7% higher than the EU average, ranking among the 14 countries at the highest price level.

According to Eurostat, the countries with the highest dairy prices were Iceland with 155% of the EU average, Luxembourg with 141.8%. Greece with 138%, Malta with 129%, Bulgaria with 126.9%, Cyprus with 124% and Albania with 120.7%.

On the other hand, the lowest dairy prices in Europe were in Poland with 77.7% of the EU average, North Macedonia with 80.9%, France with 91.7%, Bosnia with 91.8% and Turkey with 92.9% of the EU average.

Albania turns out to be the country with the highest dairy prices in the Region with a difference of almost 40% points with Macedonia and almost 30% points with other countries.

High dairy prices in our country seem paradoxical if we consider the structure of our economy where 20% of GDP is dominated by agriculture.

In 2020, the price of dairy and eggs in our country was 105% of the EU average, but in the following three years it increased by 15 percentage points.

In 2014, dairy prices in our country were as much as 95% of the EU average, but with the rapid reduction in the number of cattle, prices increased rapidly.

Dairy and eggs are the main product of the basket of goods with high importance in the nutrition process recommended for daily consumption in all age groups by the World Health Organization.

The high prices of these products, in addition to increasing the cost of living, seriously endanger the health of the population that cannot financially afford their daily purchase./ Monitor.al
