Economic activity has decreased significantly in some municipalities of the country since the new configuration of the territorial reform of 2014.
The register of businesses by municipalities shows that during 2014-2023, the number of businesses with more than 10 employees has significantly decreased in some municipalities, while in others it has increased, showing that the distribution and development have significant changes from region to region.
Detailed data show that Kamza was the municipality with the largest increase in businesses with more than 10 employees between 2014-2023, and on the other hand, the Municipality of Këlcyra had the largest decrease in businesses with more than 10 employees.
Kamza counted 180 entities with more than 10 employees in 2023, up from just 80 in 2014. A number of fashion businesses have moved to this municipality over the past decade due to lower taxes and a new workforce.
After Kamza, the number of businesses with over 10 employees has increased in the Municipality of Vora by 112% between 2014-2023. Located between Durrës and Tirana and close to Rinas Airport and the Port of Durres, adjacent to the Vora highway, it is a coveted location for business.
Saranda was the third municipality with the largest increase in businesses with 10 employees. In 2023, there were 97 such from 48 in 2024.
Further, the biggest growth of businesses with over 10 employees was in the municipalities of Pustec, Rrogozhina, Himara and Kruja and Lushnja, Durrës, Patos, Cërrik, etc.
As can be seen from the graph below, the biggest increase in the category of businesses with over 10 employees occurred in cities that have developed the fashion industry, the service industry with tourism and agriculture.
On the other hand, some small municipalities that are far from large urban centers have recorded a decrease in businesses with 10 employees.
For example, in the Municipality of Këlcyra there is no business with more than 10 employees, while in 2014 there were 12 such. In the municipality of Poliçan, there is a decrease of 50%, since in 2023 only 7 such businesses were counted from 16 that were in 2014.
The decline of businesses with over 10 employees was also strong in the municipalities of Fushë-Arres, Memaliaj, Delvina, Skrapar, Skrapar, Mallakastra and Kolonje. The commonality of these municipalities that have suffered a decline in businesses is related to the fact of population decline due to internal displacement and emigration.
Across the country in 2023, there were 9,365 local enterprises with over 10 employees.
The municipality of Tirana has the largest number of businesses with 10 employees in 2023 with 4430 businesses with over 10 employees, which make up 47% of the total businesses with 2023 in this category.
Then in the ranking come the municipalities of Durrës, Vlora, Shkodra and Elbasan, which have the largest number of businesses with more than 10 employees./ Monitor
