500 thousand lek cash payments for individuals/ The Association of Banks

The Albanian Association of Banks has opposed the government's proposal to set a limit of 500 thousand lek for cash payments by individuals. During the hearing at the Parliamentary Committee on Economy, Employment and Finance, the Association's Secretary General, Spiro Brumbulli, praised the initiative in principle, but stressed that the proposed limit is too high and does not help in the fight against informality.

Brumbulli welcomed the reduction in the cash payment limit for businesses from 150 thousand lek to 100 thousand lek, describing it as a step towards the formalization of the economy.

But according to him, setting a ceiling of 500 thousand lek for individuals conflicts with economic reality and the practices of countries in the region.

"Greece and North Macedonia have a limit of around 500 euros, the same for both businesses and individuals. What does it mean for an individual in our country to have a limit of 500 thousand lek, when the average salary is only 90 thousand lek, while a business is limited to 100 thousand lek?", said Brumbulli.

He proposed that the limit for cash payments be 50-60 thousand lekë, arguing that only in this way will the measure really have an impact on reducing cash and limiting informality.

"We are neither Germany nor the Netherlands, which have a very low level of informality. This 500 thousand lek measure does not match the efforts we are making to curb cash in the economy," he said./ CNA
