Former Greek Prime Minister Alex Tsipras has continued his exchanges with Prime Minister Edi Rama regarding the incident in Zvërnec.

Tsipras writes that he is surprised by Rama's response to the Hellenic Left Alliance's statement with accusations of nationalist rhetoric.

Tsipras emphasizes that everyone's stance against nationalism is proven by the actions they take.

The former Greek Prime Minister underlines that they must be careful not to confuse patriotic duty with nationalistic tendencies.

"My dear friend Edi, @ediramaal I hope you are well too, I must admit that I am also surprised by the fact that you rushed to respond with accusations of nationalist rhetoric to the statement of the Hellenic Left Alliance (ELAS) – a statement on the violence inflicted on a Greek citizen and member of the Greek National Minority, accompanied by a reminder of the need to comply with the European acquis.

I understand that your remarks were made in the heat of the moment and therefore I am not offended. However, you must remember that the stance of each of us against nationalism is proven by the actions we take. And you know very well that our work, efforts and efforts in promoting peace and cooperation in the region, including through the iconic Prespa Agreement, leave no room for anyone to publicly lecture me on what nationalism means, or what the 21st century Left stands for.

Ultimately, we must be careful not to confuse the patriotic duty to protect the rights of our National Minority, – and of any minority – with the nationalist tendencies that are unfortunately poisoning our world again. However, I am glad that measures were taken against those who participated in this incident. And I sincerely hope that the competent authorities will uphold the protection of the legal rights of all citizens involved.

I am sure that you also agree that progressive political forces must defend the rule of law – be it for isolated cases, or incidents that are not isolated because they keep happening again. And this is, of course, a concern for the left, all over Europe. Ten years ago, my friend Edi, we had the opportunity to discuss the importance that securing property rights for all Albanian citizens – including of course the Greek national minority – would have for Albania’s European perspective.

A significant progress in this direction will be fundamental for the European future of Albania and its people, with whom we are bound by bonds of friendship. Any setback will be an obstacle on this path. And this is a fact.

My old friend Edi, I wish you all the best and look forward to our future cooperation, for the European perspective of the Western Balkans and especially Albania, as well as for Greek-Albanian relations./ CNA
