Tritan Shehu: Our healthcare system is deeply poor and antisocial

The Committee on Health and Social Welfare is holding its next meeting today, where the draft law "On the 2026 Budget" will be reviewed article by article.

MP Tritan Shehu stated during his speech that the health budget is insufficient, while emphasizing that the health system in Albania is poor and antisocial. He further added that the main burden of expenses falls on direct payments from citizens.

"Free healthcare is the biggest lie that can be told. Healthcare costs a lot. In developed countries, the healthcare system is the first in GDP, in its expenses. We are in such a situation of poverty in the healthcare system, which is reflected in two ways: in the shortcomings of the healthcare system, which leaves much to be desired, especially the public one, and in the decline in the burden of healthcare expenses for citizens.

"Today we have a deeply poor and antisocial health system. Because a system where the main burden of expenses falls on direct payments from citizens is terribly antisocial. We have complete dominance of payments directly from patients' pockets ," said Shehu. /CNA
