The postal services market fell by 10% in 2023

The postal services market declined for the third year in a row in 2023.

According to data from the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority (AKEP), postal service providers have reported a total revenue of about 2.36 billion lek, which is a decrease of about 10% compared to 2022.

According to AKEP, Albanian Post, which is the entrepreneur with the largest market share in the field of providing postal services, has seen a decrease in income. Also, according to AKEP, the decrease in the number of postal service providers had an impact on the decrease in reported income, which number has been reduced to 24 from 36 in 2022.

Throughout the year 2023, the entrepreneurs of postal services have invested about 280 million ALL in the improvement of the infrastructure of the provision of postal services, this investment value is significantly lower by about 30% compared to 2022. More than half of the reported investments have been carried out from the entrepreneur United Transport with about 56% of the total.

In AKEP's analysis, the postal sector has undergone occasional changes, trying to adapt to market demands. Especially after the period of the pandemic, an increase in the entities that were provided with the general authorization for the provision of postal services was noticed. From 2020 to 2022, a doubling of the number of entities providing postal services is observed, bringing their number from 18 in 2020 to 36 in 2022.

Meanwhile, during the year 2023, the number of subjects suffered a significant decrease to 24, which, according to AKEP, shows the formalization of this sector.

The postal services market fell by 10% in 2023

The postal market in number of deliveries continues to be dominated by the universal postal service and the entity providing this service, the Albanian Post. The universal postal service is defined by AKEP as that service which includes the continuous provision of postal service of a defined quality and at affordable prices, including the acceptance, processing, transport and distribution of postal objects weighing up to 2 kg; reception, processing, transport and delivery of postal packages weighing up to 10 kg and services for registered postal facilities and insured postal facilities.

The total number of universal service postal facilities in 2023 was 18.4 million, a significant decrease of 16% compared to 2022. Postal facilities part of the universal service in 2023 constituted 95% of the total postal facilities of the Albanian Post and 80 % of the total of all postal facilities in Albania.

The significant decrease in the number of postal facilities of the Albanian Post was mainly due to the decrease of 17% in the number of postal facilities within the country, which constitute 96% of the total. International postal facilities resulted in an increase of 2% in 2023, where incoming international postal facilities increased by 4%, while the number of outgoing international postal facilities was reduced by 6%.

Regarding the total volume of postal deliveries throughout the year 2023, (excluding the Albanian Post, as the provider of the Universal Postal Service and as dominant in the market in terms of the volume of postal deliveries and deliveries), the market is led by Albanian Delivery Express, with about 35% of total deliveries followed by "United Transport", with 13% of the total./ Monitor.al
