“The Times”: Albanian Riviera, among the 22 best places for wine

The great summer has always had a special power over the collective imagination. In his last novel, "The Winter of Our Discontent," John Steinbeck wrote: "In early June, the world of leaves, twigs, and flowers bursts forth, and every sunset is different."

It is precisely this sensual beauty, a linen curtain moving almost imperceptibly, an onslaught of bougainvillea, that leads to the most unforgettable moments of summer vacation. Fortunately, from June onwards, this feeling is abundant in almost all corners of the globe.

The Albanian Riviera unfolds a series of jagged bays that feel like the Mediterranean before it found fame. The peaks of South Tyrol rise above pine-scented meadows.

From sparkling coasts to steamy highlands, these are the destinations where you can enjoy summer with all your senses.

Although it's a little more "discovered" these days, Albania's long coastline remains attractive, aided by olive-clad hills overlooking golden bays, and it's extremely affordable in European terms.

Its two main tourist cities are Durrës and Saranda, but in the height of summer, head to Ksamil and its offshore islands to escape the majority of Tirana families taking day trips.

Nearby is Butrint, an ancient, UNESCO-listed city and just one of the historical wonders you’ll find along this coast. Others include the giant hilltop fortress of Gjirokastra and the ruined Roman amphitheater of Durres./ The Times
