Study: The state of the media in Albania and Kosovo has worsened

The state of the media in Albania and Kosovo has worsened in recent years, Lindita Camaj, professor of journalism at the University of Houston's Faculty of Communication, who is conducting a study on the press situation in the US, said in an interview for VOA. these two countries.

Among the main problems, she lists the difficulties of journalists in accessing information and official documents.

"In our research, we are looking at how national televisions in Albania report the evening news. "Two thirds of the news in Albania have a source and are one-sided, which is more or less alarming ," she says.

According to the study, in Albania, the government is the main source of news for television.

"This shows that even though we have a plurality of media, the news is reported one-sided, there is no pluralism of sources in reporting the news. This is problematic as there is no diversity of voices or approaches leading to different perspectives. The perspective comes mainly from the government or power and this is problematic", says Ms. Camaj.

The challenge for both countries remains the fight against corruption and the lack of accountability from public officials. Asked about the role of the media in raising public opinion on these issues, Professor Camaj pointed out the lack of investigative research in Albania and Kosovo.

"Only a limited number of media outlets carry out investigative journalism and there is the problem of corruption, and again there are issues related to the way media are managed and access to information. I must emphasize, a case from Kosovo, which comes from BIRN or Kallxo.com, which is a model of reporting corruption", she said.

Regarding Klan Kosova television, Mrs. Camaj said that she welcomed the decision of the Commercial Court in Kosovo to postpone the implementation of the government's decision to suspend the certificate of this television, but said that this case could affect the freedom of the media.

"I think there could be harmful consequences for the freedom of the press in the country, the way the government can use its power to silence the media and journalists who are critical of the government. The way the government has dealt with this case has been accelerated and is seen to some extent as a political decision and has nothing to do with the issues that have been highlighted, i.e. registration. It is alarming how the government can use its position to put pressure on the media, economic and political pressure, on media that are critical", she emphasized. /VOA
