"The situation in Durrës is painful"/ DP MP: Everything has come

Democratic Party MP Igli Cara spoke today about the massive floods in Durrës. In an interview with the "Task Force" show on Syri TV, Cara said that today's situation in Durrës is very painful because thousands of families are under water.

"The highway before we reached the Vrin overpass was flooded, water bursting on one side, there was a blockage and the traffic was very heavy. Durrës often becomes like Venice, right? And today you have also seen scenes with canoes, yes, boats in Durrës. So beyond the part that seems funny, this is actually a very painful situation. Painful because thousands of families in the city of Durrës are today under the power of water. And it is certainly regrettable and here I do not want to exploit this moment politically. But to tell the truth why this situation has come about, we have a duty ," said the MP.

Further, Cara stated that the leaders of the local government are responsible for this situation, specifically according to him the mayor of Durres, Emirjana Sako. The MP also said that another reason for the major floods is the malfunctioning of the Durres hydroelectric power station.

" In fact, we, all the representatives of the opposition, but I in particular have often said that in addition to natural causes, this has, above all, and I say this with full responsibility and I will give you facts, comes from the irresponsibility of the leaders, especially of the local government. And here I have it specifically with the mayor of the municipality Sako. I will give facts and I will tell you that this is not something accidental. Durrës has had rain for hundreds of years, without a doubt. There was rain when the Democrats were in power, there was rain a few years ago when the Socialists were in power, but it has never happened like in recent years.

And there is a reason. It is the Durrës hydropower plant. Don't forget, there are two very serious things there. First, about that hydropower plant, there is an issue that is completely corrupt. 20 million dollars were taken from reconstruction funds to rebuild a hydropower plant, which in addition to technical reasons, here we also have corruption. And let's not forget that because of this new hydropower plant, once the waters of Durrës, we are talking about high waters, circulated, part of which passed through a canal that the people of Durrës know near the cemetery and the other part that went to the hydropower plant and flowed into the sea.

What did the mayor do? The one appointed at the time. She used a 20 million dollar fund and used it, as has become customary now, and everyone has learned from Rama, the Municipal Council passed a decision, the mayor at that time, who was entirely socialist, passed exactly 20 million dollars for the hydroelectric plant.

And they pushed the hydropower plant about 6 kilometers further. And they made, so to speak, S-shaped crossings, which what happens? Anyone understands, and a person who is not an engineer, that the moment you have a quantity of water that flows exactly where the Italians once built it, right, it is old, and you move it 6 kilometers further, even more so you make a break, two breaks in the shape of an S, it is normal that if you calculate the quantity of water, without taking into account that there were also some emissions that accused the construction company of that time of narrowing the pipelines. But apart from that, 6 kilometers plus the two breaks are enough to say that it is insufficient, uh, to make this intervention.  

Exactly in that place, in that place where the former spillway of the hydrovori was, the new port of Durres will be built. And now there is also a private port. Exactly, precisely for this, for this, for a whim of Rama and his friends and the new port that will be built, this very diversion is being made and don't look for other culprits.

Today the rain was normal, there was a quantity for three hours, Durrës was flooded twice. But do you know what happened? Although it has been 6-7 hours since the rain ended, all areas are still flooded again. And this shows that the problem is not simply that it is nature, but it is precisely the irresponsibility of the mayor and her entire staff. I saw them in the field today and they had also done a chronicle at the Spitalla hydropower plant. And I don't know if you followed, but he said a terrible sentence. 'We did not predict,' he said, 'that the rain would have this density,' said the democrat deputy. /CNA
