IGJEUM: Intense rainfall in the country, risk of flooding in some areas

The Institute of Geosciences has shared a forecast on weather conditions in the country.

According to the data, this afternoon (Tuesday, the 6th) and tomorrow (Wednesday, the 7th) intense rainfall is expected mainly in the north and south of the country. In the regions of Shkodër, Kukës, Dibër, Lezhë, Durrës, Elbasan, Vlorë and Gjirokastër, there may be flash floods of small mountain rivers and landslides.

In urban areas, localized flooding problems may occur in these districts, depending on the condition of the sewers.

According to IGJEO's hydrological calculations, as a result of the high-intensity rainfall over the past few days, which will continue until Thursday, January 8, there will be a dangerous increase in flows and levels in the Drin-Buna rivers, Lake Shkodra, the Mat, Shkumbin and Vjosa rivers.

The Drin-Buna River and Lake Shkodra will have an increased risk of flooding throughout today and tomorrow.

Precipitation:

This afternoon and tomorrow, intense to locally very intense rainfall is expected in the Vlora and Gjirokastër regions, while intense rainfall is expected in the Shkodër and Lezha regions. Moderate to locally intense rainfall is expected in the other regions. The rainfall is expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms.

In the North, East and Southeast at altitudes above 1000 m above sea level, precipitation will be in the form of snow.

Temperature:

Tomorrow, minimum and maximum air temperatures are expected to reach:

on the coast: 9 / 16 °C

in lowlands: 9 / 16 °C

in mountainous areas: 3 / 12 °C

Wind:

This afternoon and tomorrow the wind is expected to blow moderately to strongly on the coast. /CNA
