Albania and Kosovo lead in the Balkans for the highest number of asylum seekers

Citizens from Albania and Kosovo lead the list of applicants from the Western Balkans for asylum in a European Union country, for the first three months of 2024.

According to the latest report of the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA), the number of applicants from these two countries is very high compared to other neighboring countries such as North Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia Herzegovina and Montenegro.

According to the EUAA report, in March, 624 applications for asylum were submitted by Albanian citizens to the countries of the European Union, while 513 from Kosovo citizens, 340 from North Macedonia, 272 from Serbia, 109 from Bosnia and 37 from Montenegro.

In February 2024, 744 applications for asylum were registered by Albanian citizens in one of the countries of the European Union, while in January of this year, 648 applications were registered.

From about 2,016 applications of Albanian citizens from January to March of this year, a part of them has been reviewed, while 2,752 applications are still pending.

The examined cases of Albanians have the lowest number of asylum recognitions in the countries of the European Union, which does not even exceed 1% of requests.

Meanwhile, according to the data of the European Union Agency for Asylum during the year 2023, a total of 9,145 applications were submitted by Albanian citizens in one of the countries of the European Union.

According to EUAA data, the highest interest of Albanian citizens for asylum applications, both last year and for the first three months of this year, is in countries such as France, Italy and Germany.

In addition to the European Union, the tendency of Albanians to seek asylum during 2022 and 2023 was also in Great Britain, where it is estimated that 16 thousand to 20 thousand requests are waiting to be examined.

Meanwhile, this year, according to the British authorities, the number of Albanians who entered England irregularly through the English Channel is negligible./ Voa
