American senator raises the alarm / Chinese garlic poses a risk to national

US Senator Rick Scott has called for a government investigation into the impact of Chinese garlic imports on the national security of the United States.

Republican Scott has filed a petition with the US Department of Commerce, claiming that Chinese garlic is unsafe, citing unsanitary production methods.

China is the world's largest exporter of fresh and frozen garlic, and the United States is a major consumer.

However, trade has become a controversial process in recent years.

The United States has accused China of selling garlic at below market prices.

Since the mid-1990s, the United States has imposed various taxes on Chinese imports so that American manufacturers are not threatened by the market.

In 2019, during the administration of the former American president, Donald Trump, the tariffs have increased.

Senator Scott has mentioned all these risks, as well as the quality of garlic grown in foreign countries, "especially in Communist China".

He referred to the practices, which, according to him, are well documented in online videos as well as in documentaries.

The senator claimed that there are cases when garlic grows even in sewage.

He has called for investigations to be carried out, under the law that stipulates analysis of specific imports for US security reasons.

The Office for Science and Society at McGill University in Quebec, which tends to popularize and clarify scientific issues, has said that there is "no evidence" that sewage is used as fertilizer to grow garlic in China./ REL
