The consumption band of 800 kilowatts per hour that the government decided as a measure to cope with the energy crisis affects 4 percent of Albanian families who pay over 7,600 lek per month without VAT, or 9,120 lek with VAT.

The price per kilowatt will remain 9.5 lek for all families that consume 800 or less kilowatts per month.

For every kilowatt consumed above this band, free market prices will be applied, which are currently 42 lek per kilowatt, or about 4 times more.

Which families are affected by this measure?

The government says that they make up 4 percent of all households, but that they consume about 20 percent of the energy consumed by households.

The protective bandage for household energy consumption was applied by DP until 2013.

At that time it was 300 kilowatts. The families that consumed less paid for it with about 7 lek kilowatts, while any amount consumed above this band was paid for with 13.5 lek kilowatts./euronews
