Controls on the Kosovo-Albania border will be lifted from May 1st

The agreement on free movement between the border points of Vërmica and Morina will be restored to function from May 1, after its function was suspended from March 1.

As of May 1, the agreement between the Government of Kosovo and that of Albania, which provides for the facilitation of border procedures for vehicles with license plates of both countries, is restored.

Under this agreement, no border controls will be carried out, enabling rapid and unrestricted movement.

The free movement agreement signed between Kosovo and Albania avoided traffic and facilitated border movement during the summer season.

This season too, the facilitation of procedures will be implemented during the nine months of the year, specifically from May 1 to September 30, and from November 1 to February 28 of the following year.

Meanwhile, travelers crossing the border through the joint Albania-Kosovo points are required to present identification documents until Wednesday at midnight, due to the need for accurate processing and registration of vehicle data.

To cope with the increased flow of travelers, border authorities in both countries have engaged all available counters, in order to avoid long waits and guarantee the fastest and most efficient crossing.

In recent days, a significant increase in traffic has been observed on both sides of the border. According to data from Morina Customs, during the last three days, around 10,000 citizens, mostly from Kosovo, and 6,000 vehicles have entered the territory of Albania, while 4,000 Albanian citizens and around 2,000 vehicles have been registered at the exit.

In March 2025, border controls between Kosovo and Albania were reinstated, due to the need to process data on vehicle drivers and passengers through an expedited procedure.

This measure also aimed to avoid queues and waiting, due to the high flow of vehicles and passengers, also due to the improvement in weather conditions.

Meanwhile, during weekends and official holidays, movement was carried out without controls for vehicles with Albanian and Kosovo license plates.

The free movement agreement, signed between Kosovo and Albania in the spring of 2024, aimed to avoid traffic and facilitate border movement during the summer season./ Monitor Magazine
