The "strong man" of Vlora passes away in the resuscitation of QSUT

Convict Fotaq Zaharia, also known as one of the "strongmen of Vlora", passed away in the premises of the "Mother Teresa" Hospital Center in Tirana.

The Directorate of Prisons informs that the 64-year-old man died at 01:10 this morning (August 26), in the Intensive Care Unit of QSUT.

"Zaharia was hospitalized with respiratory insufficiency and was being treated since August 16, 2024. The deterioration of his health required his transfer to QSUT for specialized care. Heads of the Institution, Police Station No. 4 and the Internal Control Service of Prisons (SHKBB) have been informed about the further procedural steps", it is reported about the case, while adding that "the Directorate of Prisons has expressed condolences to the family".

Who is Fotaq Zaharia? 

Zaharia was sentenced by the Serious Crimes Court to a quarter of a century in prison. He escaped from the detention rooms in Vlora in 2001, to be caught later and subjected to isolation, but after a few years he showed significant health problems.

Operation "Force of the Law", OFL, launched a property investigation against him four years ago.

Fotaq Zaharia, considered during the years 1997-2007 as the strongman of Vlora, due to the armed robberies and hostage-taking he carried out, passed through the sieve of financial verification. 

Among other things, the Prosecutor's Office managed to prove the charge of armed robbery, hostage-taking of a businessman's wife in Vlora and "premeditated murder", pending against the crime boss in Vlora, Gentian Musabelli./ CNA
