TikTok shutdown in Albania/Foreign media: Government blames platform for

The government decided on Thursday to shut down TikTok for 12 months, after a series of discussions and debates on the subject.

The closure of this platform has not gone unnoticed by foreign media, according to which the government blames the popular video-sharing platform for inciting violence and bullying, especially among children.

As reported in foreign media, officials are in contact with TikTok to install filters such as parental control, age verification, and the inclusion of the Albanian language in the application.

It is believed that authorities had held 1,300 meetings with around 65,000 parents who recommended and were in favor of closing or restricting the TikTok platform.

The cabinet initiated the measure last year after a teenager stabbed another teenager to death in November, following an argument that began on TikTok.

When Prime Minister Edi Rama said in December that they intended to shut down the social media platform, TikTok demanded “urgent clarity from the Albanian government” about the case of the stabbed teenager.

TikTok did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the government's decision./CNA
