The Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania has come out with a reaction regarding the results of the 2023 census.

The Autocephalous Orthodox Church says that the population census does not really reflect reality, noting that citizens are not asked about religious affiliation in many cases.

The statement said that a large number of believers were not interviewed for religious affiliation, as they were not visited by any registrar.

The Autocephalous Orthodox Church points out that according to the baptism registers, the number of Orthodox Christians is many times greater than the census results.

The result of the 2023 Census, regarding the percentage of the number of Orthodox Christians, does not really reflect the reality. This has happened for several reasons, among which we will mention a few:

Enumerators, in many cases, did not ask interviewees about religious affiliation.

We have documented evidence that a large number of believers were not interviewed because they were not visited by any registrar.

According to our baptism registers, it is clearly shown that the number of Orthodox Christians is many times greater than it appears in the Census.

According to the statistics of 1927, we have the following data: Sunni and Bektash Muslims constituted 67.5%; Orthodox 22.3% and Catholics 10%.

Although the question about religious belief was optional, the large number of unqualified believers of 332,155, of atheists 85,311, of those who preferred not to answer 244,331 and of those who were not available 134,451 – a total of 796,248 – approximately 1/3 of the population testifies to the inaccuracy of this Census./ CNA
