Veliaj's 99-c lawyer's request reveals tactics

This Tuesday, the Special Court is holding a hearing on the merits of the case against the arrested mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj. The latter did not attend the hearing and, through a statement sent to the court, stated that he refused to be present because he had not yet been familiarized with some of the files in the file against him.

But this was not the only case today that Veliaj used his tactics to evade justice.

Veliaj's lawyer, Plarent Ndreca, today shared with the GJKKO five requests of his client, who has been in the cells of Durrës prison for about 16 months.

Ndreca submitted requests, one of which raised the claim of the time gap from one session to the next.

"We estimate that a session once a week does not guarantee effective protection, it is a very tight deadline. At least there should be two weeks between one session and the next," he said.

If Plarent Ndreca and Erion Veliaj had requested a speedy trial, the case would have already been concluded. July is approaching, so about 1 year has passed since SPAK submitted the acts and all the evidence in the file to the court.

If the trials had been held without adjournments or with scenarios of changing lawyers, Veliaj would have already received the decision from the court, perhaps acquittal or conviction.

If he had cooperated with justice, most of the defendants in the case, including his wife, Ajola Xoxa, as well as the various businessmen with whom it turned out he had collaborated, would not have been charged at all.

But apparently, Veliaj, together with Ndreca, are intentionally requesting that the court hearings continue to be postponed, as even today, his lawyer, the defendant from SPAK, has requested that the hearing be held once every two weeks, while Dumani has said that the prosecution could also request a trial every day, but it is known that this is impossible, so once a week is appropriate.

It seems that Veliaj continues to postpone court hearings. In addition to the constant change of lawyers. We recall here the fact that the evidence was given to him electronically and was received by his legal representatives, but then Erion Veliaj remembered and asked to have it printed. When the materials were printed within 24 hours after the GJKKO decision and taken to the cells of Durrës, he refused to receive them.

Then came lawyer Plarent Ndreca and now every scheme and scenario has started to be revealed again.

This is because the prosecutors say 'let's have a trial every week', so the defendant Veliaj will also have a faster trial and justice will be served as he and Plarent Ndreca request, when in fact the latter has requested that the trials be held every two weeks.

So, everything is clear: the tactic and strategy that will be used in the GJKKO by Erion Veliaj and Plarent Ndreca will be to postpone court hearings and extend the judicial process to catch up on some deadlines for the trial, which could lead to the release of the mayor of Tirana from prison.

In fact, the truth is that the court has decided to suspend the terms of the security measure, which means that Mayor Veliaj, regardless of any movement, will continue to remain in prison.

He will not appear in court because he refuses to be in a cage, he demands special treatment, and also to continue his political "tallavana" that he did when he was free, to have the media, perhaps even a microphone outside, to sing along with his influencers, singers and supporters who have sparked protests against Prime Minister Rama./CNA
