The Special Court is expected to decide the fate of Erion Veliaj today

The Special Court, almost 1 year after his arrest, is expected to decide today the fate of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, whether the case will proceed to trial on the merits or not.

In the February 2 session, the GJKKO closed the preliminary review of the file of the mayor of Tirana, arrested since February 10, 2025, against whom 13 charges for 5 serious criminal offenses are filed.

The Special Prosecution Office closed the investigation into Veliaj 7 months ago and sent his file to the Special Court. 7 months and it has still not been decided whether Veliaj's file will go to trial on the merits or not.

All this because the mayor of Tirana and his "soldiers" have found various pretexts and schemes to postpone court hearings and avoid facing justice.

The most recent case is that of the February 2 session, where Veliaj left the courtroom and even requested the exclusion of the jury.

The scheme even went further, becoming even more ridiculous. His lawyer said that she didn't have enough of her client in Durres prison, because the taxi bill that was waiting for him outside the prison was too much. Nothing more, just Veliaj's "circuses" to postpone the trial.

The tactics of Erion Veliaj and his lawyers to postpone the preliminary hearings have been consistent and every possible machination has been used to achieve the goal.

In the January 19th hearing, Veliaj's justification was that he had not met with the court-appointed lawyer, Valentina Teodorescu.

The preliminary hearing for Erion Veliaj scheduled for January 5 was postponed because Veliaj and his legal defense attorneys did not appear at the hearing, claiming that the Prisons van had not arrived in time to pick up Veliaj from Durres prison.

A claim that was rejected by the Directorate of Prisons, where the institution announced that Veliaj had been waiting for a few minutes by the van, but the mayor, arrested for 5 serious criminal offenses, had not gone.

Another tactic used by Veliaj was the dismissal of lawyers in the preliminary hearing on December 12. On December 12, 2025, Erion Veliaj dismissed lawyers Artan Gjermëni and Ermir Beta, claiming that they failed to prevent him from entering the glass cage. After their dismissal, Veliaj was assigned lawyer Valentina Teodorescu by the GJKKO.

The hearings scheduled for November 12 and 17, as well as December 2 and 5, were postponed because Veliaj's lawyers requested time to familiarize themselves with the investigative documents. Documents that Veliaj's lawyers have received since July.

The preliminary hearing, scheduled for October 28, was postponed due to the tactics of Veliaj's lawyers. The preliminary hearing on October 21 was postponed due to the lawyers' boycott following the lawyer's arrest in Elbasan.

Due to the lawyers' boycott, the preliminary hearing on October 10 was postponed. The boycott was undertaken after the murder of Judge Astrit Kalaja in the courtroom.

The preliminary hearing, scheduled for September 29, 2025, was postponed because some of the defendants had not been notified of the hearing.

With 13 charges for 5 serious criminal offenses, Erion Veliaj has evaded justice like classic fraudsters, with 1001 tricks, ways and maneuvers./ CNA
