The students of the Faculty of Medicine have sent their case to the Strasbourg Court, regarding the holding of diplomas by the government through a decision after they finish their studies.

In the lawsuit of the students against the Albanian state, it is emphasized that: This case is the first in the jurisprudence of the Court. It is about legislation (Law 60/2023, or the "Law") that requires medical students of Tirana University of Medicine to: either sign an agreement obliging them to (I) waive their right to receive their degree after completion of six-year studies; and (II) accept compulsory work in the territory of Albania (in places determined by a government committee) for a period of 5 years (or 3 years for students currently enrolled in years 2-4; and 2 years for those in years 5-6).

Students oppose forced labor even though the Constitutional Court granted the right only for the duration, making a deduction of the term./ CNA
