Fatos Nano's wife, Xhoana Nano, delivered her speech at the tributes held at the Palace of Congresses.

In a speech filled with emotions and tears, Xhoana Nano said that today is the saddest day of her life.

The former prime minister's wife said that Nano walked through the mud of politics without getting dirty from it.

Xhoana Nano said that despite the price he paid, Nano did not give up trying to see Albania more prosperous.

Today is the darkest and saddest day of my life. I am saying goodbye to the man I spent a quarter of a century with and who connected me to many, many shared dreams and disappointments. Here, a quarter of a century ago, I fell in love with Fatos. At the time, I didn't understand why, but now I know. I had fallen in love not just with Fatos as a person, but also with the vision of a different Albania.

Over time, I was lucky to discover in Fatos values ??and qualities that are not so common in our lives, much less political and public. He was much more than what has been said and will be said in the media. He did not know and did not want to pretend. He did what he believed in and believed in what he did. He believed wholeheartedly in European values. He walked through the mud of politics without getting dirty from it.

He led the government when the country was on the verge of its greatest civil conflict. He was direct, sometimes stubborn and difficult, but always honest. He loved this country with all his heart. Despite the personal price he had to pay, he did not give up trying to see Albania more just and prosperous.

Amidst the deep pain, I have an even greater sense of gratitude that I was lucky enough to know him, to walk alongside him, to live with him. Thank you for being who you were. Thank you for giving your life without sparing for me, for us, for our country. You will always remain in our memory not only as a statesman, but also as a man, as our man. Rest in peace, near God.
