 "International Sign Language Day"

The "General Assembly of the United Nations" decided September 23, as "International Day of Sign Language", with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of sign language and the realization of full rights for deaf people.

This is seen as a unique opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of the users of this language.

According to the World Federation of the Deaf, there are more than 70 million deaf people worldwide.

More than 80% of them live in developing countries. Together, they use more than 300 different sign languages.

The Embassy of the United States in Tirana posted a congratulatory message on the X network.

"Albania, Happy International Deaf Week! Today is #InternationalSignLanguageDay, celebrated as part of the #InternationalWeek of the Deaf. This week is dedicated to awareness and recognition of the importance of sign languages ??around the world. It reminds us of the importance of inclusion, bridging communication gaps and protecting the rights of the deaf and hard of hearing communities. Let's work to ensure equal access to communication for everyone," the announcement of the US Embassy reads. /CNA
