Korça has honored one of the most important figures, not only of the southeastern city, but of all of Albania, the prominent intellectual Llazar Zai Fundon.

In the middle of the city, right in the heart of Korça, his bust now stands tall, in the square that bears his name, Llazar Zai Fundo.

Llazar Fundo is a complex figure in Albanian history. A polyglot intellectual with 9 foreign languages, who was born into a merchant family from Voskopoja in Korça, then in his youth he became a communist, was shot by communists and before the firing squad he left his will: "The communism that we idealized as Christ, surpasses even the devil in its wickedness. I was a communist, but I will never die like that. I could lie to save my life, but I cannot do such a thing. The photos that are in the bag should be given to the mother in case she is alive". These are the words of an intellectual of European caliber.

Academic figures have praised the placement of the bust of Llazar Zai Fundo in Korça, saying that this was a belated act but it has finally been placed in the right place.

Positive and appreciative reactions were numerous, both from politicians and from historians, writers, and citizens who recognize his extraordinary contribution, as one of the signatories of the Ventotene Manifesto, For a United Europe, and therefore one of the founders of the European Union.

But with the placement of the bust of Llazar Fundo, it seems that the controversy has begun, but from the envious and those who, as historian Aurel Plasari emphasized, were jealous of bright minds.

Renowned journalist and writer Agim Xhafka has explained by listing the reasons why the bust of Llazar Zai Fundo is placed where it belongs, in his house in Korça, in the square that now bears his name, Llazar Zai Fundo.

"As soon as the bust of Zai Fundo was installed, the controversy began. Typical localist jealousy. Why was he installed right at the head of the country? So I'm explaining: Zai was installed in his own home first. Second, he was the first European from Korçë. Third, he was exiled and fought fascism. Fourth, he was killed on the orders of Enver Hoxha. The sentence was written with his own hand. Fifth, he was a rare intellectual who does us all honor. Without further ado, bringing him out of oblivion does us all good. Let's look at our history without dark glasses, without manipulation, without distortion. We've lived long enough with the hallucinations of dictatorship," writes Agim Xhafka.
