Bloomberg: Albanian groups are one of the foundations of the Ecuadorian mafia

The international media Bloomberg has dedicated an article to Ecuador and talked about the gangs operating in this country, saying that it has become a "narco state".

According to this media, Ecuador has become increasingly violent for the cocaine trade.

As you read the lines of the article, Albania is also mentioned as a mafia base.

Excerpt from the article:

A few years ago, Ecuador was an island of peace sandwiched between Colombia and Peru, the world's largest cocaine producers.

But since 2018, drug seizures and murders have risen alarmingly, widely blamed on organized crime groups.

For many of Ecuador's citizens, the killing of Fernando Villavicencio was proof enough that the state had become powerless against organized crime.

In the first seven months of this year, Ecuador's violent deaths totaled 3,568—a 72% increase from the same period in 2022.

The country's military intelligence says it has identified dozens of active gangs.

Mafias based in Colombia, Mexico and even Albania are now widely understood to control much of Ecuador's territory.

The shift has made it harder to earn an honest living there. The official unemployment rate has remained low, but Ecuador's gross domestic product per capita has shrunk by 5% in the past four years.

This is the creeping loss of freedom that Villavicencio promised to restore. The country's stability and fortunes have fallen so far, so fast, that it can be difficult to understand how it all happened, let alone what to do next./ CNA
