Veliaj falls again/ Journalist declared innocent

A new development comes today in the context of dozens of lawsuits that the arrested mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, has filed against journalists and public figures, in order to silence them, attempting to declare them guilty simply because they denounce or express their free opinion.

This time it is about journalist Aulon Kalaja, who this Tuesday was declared innocent by the Criminal Chamber of the Tirana Court, after being sued by Veliaj for defamation.

In his speech to the media, Kalaja emphasizes that he has always stood by the statements he made against Veliaj on television, without being intimidated, while stating that since the beginning of October, when the trial began, he has held a total of 17 hearings against the mayor.

 "I want to inform you that today I won the trial against the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, who had sued me for defamation for a statement I made on television. The trial began in October. After 17 hearings, today justice was established by the court, where I emerged innocent and absolutely that the mayor took me to court as a strategic lawsuit, to intimidate me, so that I would withdraw my statements. I stood by my statements and the court today deemed that out of all of them, I should be declared innocent and without a doubt that today I am very happy both as a journalist, but also as a young politician", - underlined Kalaja./CNA
