Accusations against Irena Gjoka/ KLJ reacts

The Supreme Judicial Council has reacted after the accusations against judge Irena Gjkoka that she was arrested in the neighboring country, Greece.

According to the HCJ, it is about repeated statements and that the judge is being harassed by the media.

Announcement of the Supreme Judicial Council:

The Supreme Judicial Council, as a body tasked by the Constitution to guarantee the independence, accountability and smooth running of the judicial power, has closely followed recent developments regarding public statements in the media by public figures and their defenders in the criminal process, which in their content, they seriously damage the image and dignity of Ms. Irena Gjoka, acting judge at the Special Court of First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime.

The Council notes with regret that these repeated public statements in the media constitute an attack on judges due to their duty, aiming to compromise the independence of the judiciary, through media harassment.

At the same time, the Supreme Judicial Council assesses that these attitudes not only negatively affect the public's trust in the judicial power, but also create a wrong image of the activity of judges during the exercise of their duties with the aim of forcing them to give decisions contrary to principles of independence and impartiality.

Also, the High Judicial Council emphasizes that lawyers, based on the law and the professional code of ethics, must behave with respect, honesty and integrity towards the court, in order to represent the interests of clients.

The High Judicial Council invites all stakeholders to respect the judges and their commitment to strengthening the rule of law, as the administration of justice must be free from any kind of influence or interference from public or private entities.

In compliance with the legal provisions in force, we bring to your attention that the legal means to oppose a court decision is to appeal to a higher court./ CNA
