Journalist Klodiana Lala focused today on the legal case related to the arrested mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj.

In a television studio, Lala emphasized that the accusations against Veliaj are serious, especially as a local elected official.

According to Lala, the process against Veliaj will be completed as soon as possible, while SPAK's claims remain legitimate.

"There is a problem, the law does not allow a court to suspend a local elected official from exercising his function, as in the case of Veliaj. I said that the way he was dismissed was illegal as long as he does not resign. The request was from the socialist members and was completely unfounded. Mr. Veliaj is indeed the mayor of Tirana, but on the other hand, the law gives him the right, the way he will exercise his duty is through delegation. For those who have been attentive and if they have followed the session in the Criminal Court with interest, and someone asked Veliaj how he will exercise his duty while you are isolated. He said through delegation. Mr. Veliaj gave his answer by telling a judicial institution that I will delegate power. The attributes that he could exercise as a local elected official are exercised by his deputies who, with Mr. Veliaj's signature, have taken that attribute. So, in my view, the request was unfounded. Veliaj is the mayor, but he delegates power. Beleri was not allowed to swear because the law did not allow it, Veliaj cannot be allowed to obtain a special permit to exercise his duty. Veliaj, says SPAK, is being kept behind bars because due to his power as mayor there is a risk of him tampering with evidence or committing more serious crimes. SPAK says I am keeping him isolated for these risks and on the other hand he is required to go to the Municipal Council. The process for Veliaj will be completed as soon as possible, his accusations are among the most serious raised against a local elected official.
