We assume that you have been financially successful. You belong to the middle class and have enjoyed all the perks that come with it: a bigger house, financial stability, bigger cash reserves.
But inflation is weighing on everyone, and according to experts, you won't be able to afford some things in the next five years.
"The middle class is doing well right now," said Alyssa Huff, real estate expert and owner of Sell House As Is. "This segment of the population can buy homes with affordable mortgages, put their kids through college with the help of student loans, pay for health care, save for retirement and even enjoy a few occasional luxuries."
But Huff said she is worried about the future: "Rising housing costs, tuition fees, health care costs and inflation could make life more difficult for middle-class families in the next five years."
Huff said it can become more difficult to afford a home, send kids to college or save for retirement. Even simple pleasures, such as vacations or buying fancy things, can become more financially unaffordable.
The good news is that you can better prepare for the future by knowing which costs will increase.
"As someone who cares deeply about financial well-being," Huff said, "I urge the middle class to start planning wisely now to weather these potential storms and not sacrifice dreams for the future." .
Below are some costs that will continue to rise and that you should watch out for.
Family trips
"I would say that the tradition of family travel, especially overseas, is probably going to be something that the middle class won't be able to afford in the next few years," said David Kemmerer, CEO of CoinLedger.
"In many ways, traditional family vacations have declined over the past decade, due to a variety of factors, including Covid-19 and inflation."
Since middle-class incomes are not expected to increase, he added that travel money will probably go toward things like housing and other necessities.
New cars
Melanie Musson, finance expert at firm Clearsurance, said the middle class probably won't be able to afford a new car in the not-too-distant future.
"Vehicle prices have gone up a lot in the last four years and are likely to continue to go up," Musson said. "Factors such as safety, high technology and batteries of electric vehicles, contribute to the increase in prices."
Private school fees
But with rising costs and inflationary pressures affecting everything from airline ticket prices to hotels and restaurants, he said what was once seen as an attainable goal for the middle class could soon become a luxury.
"You should make the necessary adjustments to your retirement planning by building a more robust savings strategy that takes into account the higher costs of leisure activities and travel."
"Safe" investments for retirees
According to Kojonen, the concept of "safe" investments can also change.
"Traditionally," he said, "bonds and fixed income have been seen as the cornerstones of a retiree's portfolio, providing income and financial stability."
However, while interest rates are at historic lows and inflation is on the rise, he said the real returns on these investments may not keep up with inflation.
"This reality poses a risk to the preservation of purchasing power for many middle-class retirees," he explained.
"In advising clients, it has become increasingly important to explore diversified investment strategies that can provide protection against inflation while ensuring that retirement savings support clients' lifestyles and goals." /Monitor
