26 victims/ Today marks 16 years since the explosion in Gërdec

Today marks 16 years since the explosion in Gërdec, where 26 people lost their lives and hundreds of others were injured in the weapons dismantling factory. 

Three days after the tragedy on March 18, 2008, the government declared a day of national mourning and numerous civil protests followed.

The tragedy was also accompanied by other political events. The Minister of Defense, Fatmir Mediu, would resign a few days after the tragedy. He denied responsibility for the explosion or any corrupt links in the arms trade and said that resigning as minister was a "moral responsibility."

The investigation file for the explosion that happened in Gërdec in 2008 is already in the hands of SPAK. Dozens of officials and former officials have been questioned by the Special Prosecutor's Office. 

GJKKO is investigating the case for serious charges of "Corruption of high officials" and "money laundering".

The former Minister of Defense, Fatmir Mediu, who has testified several times in SPAK, where he declared that he is innocent, is also under investigation for this file.

We emphasize that the 28 defendants sent to court today have been released from prison and justice has not yet been served. /CNA
