A therapy gives hope that a cure for brain cancer may be found

An innovative new treatment for an aggressive form of brain cancer known as glioblastoma has shown promising results after being used to treat a 72-year-old man.

The tumor shrank just days after he received the new drug through an infusion. Although the result of receiving the therapy in two other patients with a similar diagnosis was less positive, this case still gives hope that the search for an effective treatment for a currently incurable disease will one day bear fruit.

Glioblastoma is one of the deadliest forms of cancer. It begins within the central nervous system, rapidly developing into a malignant mass, and within five years, 95 percent of patients suffering from this disease die of the consequences.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Cancer Research Center (USA) suspected that a treatment based on the patient's own immune system, known as CAR T-cell therapy, might be able to produce results where other drugs have failed.

This therapy, which is otherwise approved to treat various forms of blood cancer, has an impressive ability to find cancer cells, and scientists wanted to test it in glioblastoma as well.

Science Alert compares this postpak to "hiring a local mercenary to quietly track down a wanted villain."

Preclinical laboratory tests have shown that the therapy works as expected and even attracts other regulatory T cells to join the fight.

Only the first phase of clinical research has been completed to determine how safe the procedure is, as well as its potential as a drug./ CNA
