Morata's touching confession: I couldn't breathe, I thought about

Alvaro Morata is one of the players who has suffered greatly from depression and mental health problems.

The Spanish international has spoken openly in a documentary about the difficult period he experienced after Atletico Madrid were eliminated by Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals of the Champions League last year. The former Real Madrid, Chelsea, Juventus and Milan player admits that facing the criticism and immense pressure after that match led to a serious psychological state.

Morata admits that he felt extreme fear, physical and spiritual stress, as well as a desire to isolate himself from everything.

"When that match ended, I was alone in the locker room for a long time. I just wanted to cry. From that moment everything started. My legs hurt, I couldn't breathe, my chest was tight. I was scared about everything. Self-destructive thoughts were going through my mind," Morata confessed. He says he went so far as to consider faking an injury to avoid the European Championship.

In a phone call with the Spanish national team doctor, he expressed his desire to not be part of the tournament, having lost all enthusiasm for football. However, this difficult moment was managed with the help of two key figures: Andrés Iniesta and coach Luis de la Fuente.

The former Barcelona midfielder, who himself suffered a severe depressive episode after the loss of his friend Dani Jarque in 2009, shared his personal experience with Morata and helped him regain his confidence. The national team coach also strongly supported him in staying committed to the team.
