Investigations into Astori's death, Court sentences three doctors

After more than seven years of investigation, the Court of Florence has found three doctors guilty in connection with the death of former Fiorentina captain Davide Astori.

Giorgio Galanti, the former director of sports medicine at Careggi, was sentenced to a year in prison, while Loria Toncelli and Pietro Amedeo Modesti received eight-month sentences, the latter also for destroying official documents. Investigations have revealed that the doctors had falsified or neglected medical documents.

Prosecutor Antonio Nastasi had requested harsher sentences: three and a half years for Galanti, three years for Toncelli and one year and four months for Modesti. However, the court imposed lighter measures, not recognizing the aggravating circumstances of the “guarantee certificate”.

Claims for compensation from the former player's family were also rejected. Astori died on 4 March 2018 from an undiagnosed heart condition. He was found dead in his hotel room before a match against Udinese.
