Great innovation! Not only red and yellow card, now players are given another color too

Portugal is the only country in the world where football referees can show players a white card for fair play and it aims to push this educational measure into professional football internationally.

In 2014, the National Plan for Ethics in Sport (PNED), a national organization operating within the Portuguese Institute for Sport and Youth, introduced a white card in age championships.

"I see a successful future for the white card", says Jose Lima, PNED coordinator. "It is a revolutionary card from a pedagogical point of view. It brings out the best in sports," he added in an interview.

The referee, in addition to yellow and red cards for fouls or unsportsmanlike conduct, can show players a white card for positive behavior during the game.
