Record number of fans at the World Cup, expectations shattered

The 2026 World Cup is recording record numbers in terms of fan attendance at stadiums in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Before Sunday's matches, 2,307,947 spectators were registered in the stadiums, with an average of 64,110 fans per match and a fill rate of 99.54%.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino hailed the 48-team tournament as a great success. A new record was also set for daily attendance, with 281,223 fans attending four group stage matches. This figure surpassed the record set in the United States in 1994, when four matches were attended by 277,070 spectators.

Even matches of more limited interest have attracted large numbers of fans, such as Belgium-Iran with 70,317 spectators and Ecuador-Curacao with 68,598.

Organizers are now aiming to surpass the historic record of 3.5 million spectators set at the 1994 World Cup. Despite high ticket prices, interest in the matches has remained very high.
