Germany defender ends World Cup, serious injury leaves him out for several months

Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck will not continue his World Cup adventure after a serious injury to his left ankle.

The German Football Association confirmed that medical examinations revealed a torn ligament, which will keep him out of action for several months.

Schlotterbeck was injured during Germany's 2-1 win over Ivory Coast. The 26-year-old defender was a key starter for Julian Nagelsmann's side, forming the centre of defence alongside Jonathan Tah.

He had also left his mark in the first match of the tournament, scoring his first goal with the national team in a 7-1 victory over Curaçao.

His injury will leave the German defence without a significant lead for the remainder of the tournament. However, Germany have already secured their place in the last 32 after two wins in the group stage. The team will conclude their group stage against Ecuador.
