Milan-Como in Australia, towards cancellation. The latest move is revealed

The months-long move to hold the Serie A match between Milan and Como in Perth, Australia, is heading towards cancellation. According to information in the last few hours, the February 8 clash, which seemed confirmed by all parties, is not expected to take place outside Italy. Serie A League President Simonelli had recently stated that the agreement was in the final stages, but some additional conditions imposed by the Asian Football Confederation have changed the scenario.

The main problem is related to the requirement that the match be judged by Australian referees, a condition that was not foreseen in the first phase of the negotiations. This criterion, together with several other organizational elements, are pushing towards the decision to cancel the trip to Australia.

Currently, the only possibility that could restore the initial scenario is an intervention by FIFA, but so far there are no clear signals in this direction.

With the termination of this agreement, a new venue and date for the match must also be determined. The option of holding the match at San Siro on February 8 is not possible, as the stadium will be busy with activities related to the opening ceremony of the Milan–Cortina Olympic Games, scheduled for February 6.

Due to championship regulations, Milan cannot move the match to another facility, forcing the League to find an alternative date so as not to clash with the calendar of both teams.

Since neither Milan nor Como participate in European competitions, the possibilities open up on February 17 or 18, as well as February 24 or 25. However, these dates also depend on Inter's calendar, as the stadium is shared between the two teams and the possible commitments of the black and blues in the Champions League play-offs could influence the final decision.

Another possibility that has been ruled out is a reversal of the order of the matches. The return leg between the two teams is scheduled for January 15 in Como, but Inter-Lecce will be played at San Siro on January 14, a match postponed earlier due to the Super Cup. This makes it impossible to move the Milan-Como match to that date.

Thus, while it was expected that Serie A would hold its first official match in its history in Australia, the new organizational dynamics have put the project in question. The final decision is expected in the coming days, but everything indicates that the challenge will be played in Italy and not in Perth, as initially planned.
