Izmir Smajlaj elected president of Athletics, Luiza Gega: They worked hard

Izmir Smajlaj, the national record holder in the long jump, has been elected the new President of the Albanian Athletics Federation. His election took place during the Extraordinary Electoral Assembly, where he was the only candidate in the race, after former president Taulant Stërmasi withdrew from the candidacy.

Smajlaj takes on a four-year term at the head of the Federation, moving from his active career in athletics to a leadership role in the institution that manages the discipline of athletics in the country.

The Assembly also approved the new composition of the Federation Presidency. The elected members are Vaso Selenica, Emiljana Ciko, Gledis Hallunaj, Oltion Luli, Zhuje Bajko and Vladimir Gjonaj.

The latest developments have also been accompanied by reactions from important figures in Albanian athletics. One of them is champion Luiza Gega, who reacted through a video shared on social media.

"They worked hard to not vote for me. I simply gave an introductory speech, not because they don't know who I am, but because I wanted to look them in the eye when the moment came. I also said two words at the end that I really don't deserve to be part of it because I do things with passion, I love this sport and we want to move forward," said Luiza Gega.
