Atalanta's loss "burns" Italy in Europe, Bundesliga widens gap

Atalanta's 6-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 has significantly complicated the possibility of Italy having a fifth team in this competition next season.

This result has widened the gap in the UEFA coefficient rankings between Serie A and the Bundesliga. Meanwhile, England has now mathematically secured first place in this ranking and an additional place in the Champions League.

Italy remains in competition with Germany and Spain, but the differences have increased and recovery seems difficult. Hope remains in Italian clubs that continue to compete in other European competitions.

The results of Roma, Bologna and Fiorentina could affect the points tally until the end of the season. Atalanta's defeat is considered one of the heaviest defeats by an Italian club in European cups.

 Currently, fourth place in Serie A is expected to remain the last position that ensures qualification for next season's Champions League.
