FIFA and UEFA have decided to extend the exclusion of Russia from all football activities.

The Russian Football Union (RFU) has been banned from FIFA and UEFA competitions since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

However, Russia's exclusion from FIFA and UEFA activities and competitions will continue.

This means that neither men's nor women's teams can play in the World Cup or the European Championship. Domestic clubs will also not be able to play in UEFA competitions.

FIFA and UEFA plan to ban Russia from their competitions until the 2026 World Cup, meaning they will not be able to take part in the qualifiers.

UEFA released a pamphlet on November 11 stating that 192 group stage matches will be played in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, effectively guaranteeing Russia's exclusion from the tournament.

How will UEFA's 2026 World Cup qualifying draw work?

With the 2026 World Cup set to feature 36 teams, an increase from the 32 teams that qualified for Qatar, there are changes to how the qualifying system works.

A total of 12 UEFA teams will qualify as group winners or play-offs.

Teams will be drawn into 12 groups of four or five teams on December 13, however the four-team groups will not begin their matches until September. /CNA
