Two Premier League players in the same team are in a relationship and are open to declaring they are a gay couple. But even though it's no secret in the dressing room, the stars are reluctant to go public.

It comes after we revealed earlier this year how a gay former England and Premier League player is in talks to become the first to come out in a TV documentary. And brave Blackpool player Jake Daniels, 17, came out as gay in May after winning the acceptance of his team-mates.

The homosexuality of the two Premier League stars was revealed earlier this year. A source said: “They didn't see the need to hide from their teammates, and why should they? Nobody was worried about it and they had the support of the coach and the management at the club. But they decided not to go public, although neither is embarrassed and it can happen.

 "During the season they wanted to focus on their game. While making a statement would be positive, it could distract them from their performances on the field. Teammates have also been told not to say anything publicly to protect their privacy."

There was a stir this week when Qatar's World Cup ambassador Khalid Salman described homosexuality as "a blight on the mind" in an interview. England legend Gary Lineker, 61, said last month that he knows "one or two" gay Premier League players who have come very close to coming out.

And The Sun on Sunday has revealed how a Premier League player can open up about his sexuality in a documentary currently in production and likely to air on Channel 4. A source said: “This could be a massive step forward for gay players. Everyone in football has been talking about it."
